Mr. Joe Eddie "Papa Joe" Perkins, Sr., age 69, of Livingston, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, in Livingston, Texas. Born on October 27, 1956, in Polk County, Texas, Joe was the beloved sonof the late Gertie and Garfield Perkins Sr.
Joe grew up in a large and loving family with nine siblings, where he learned early on the values of responsibility, love, and unity. He attended Corrigan High School in Corrigan, Texas, where he quickly became known as an all-around star athlete. Excelling in basketball, football, and track & field, Joe left a lasting legacy by setting a record in the Long/Broad Jump that still stands since 1974.
It was during his high school years that Joe met his soulmate and lifelong partner, Shirley Jean Mays of Leggett, Texas. The two were married on February 28, 1975, beginning a union that would span 48 beautiful years until her passing in 2023. Together they built a life centered around love, faith, and family in Livingston. They were blessed with two children—daughter Shermeke Perkins and son Joe Perkins II—who brought immense joy and pride to their lives.
Joe was a devoted father who took an active role in every aspect of his children's lives. Whether coaching baseball, basketball, or little league football—or cheering from the sidelines—he was always present with unwavering support. His love extended deeply to his grandchildren: Tishori, Quan (Kayla), Shay, Destiny, Buckie, JoJo, Jayden, Jazz, Tae, and Gabby; and to his great-grandchildren: Chason, Aubrey, Hendrix, Amir, Saiyan, Ares, and Kiyara. He played an integral role in their upbringing and cherished every moment spent with them.
A man of deep faith and a generous heart, Joe lived his life in service to others. Known for his kind nature and giving spirit, he touched countless lives throughout his community. Whether it was through his famous fried fish meals shared with neighbors or simply lending a helping hand or listening ear—Joe’s presence brought warmth and comfort to many. Next to his family and faith stood his unwavering loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys. A die-hard fan through thick and thin, Joe found joy in watching games surrounded by loved ones. He also found peace in fishing and camaraderie in playing dominos—especially alongside his best friend and older brother Garfield “GC” Perkins. The two were inseparable—truly two peas in a pod.
Joe shared special bonds with many dear to him: his sister-in-law Johnnice Bunn of Lufkin held a unique place in his heart; cousin Margaret White remained close throughout the years; and niece Cathy Butler brightened his days with her weekly check-in calls. His circle of love extended far beyond immediate family to include a host of relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion carried on by those who survive him: daughter Shermeke Perkins (Clarence "Chilli"); son Joe Perkins II (Shelindria); mother-in-law Bernice Mays; grandchildren Tishori, Quan (Kayla), Shay, Destiny, Buckie, JoJo, Jayden, Jazz, Tae, Gabby; great-grandchildren Chason, Aubrey, Hendrix, Amir, Saiyan, Ares, Kyara; sisters Lowonda Perkins, Edna Cratic, Vivian Mark; brothers Garfield Perkins (GC), Curtis Perkins (Carla), Paul Perkins, Roy Davis (Rachel); in-laws Johnnice Bunn, Glenda Sue Dirden, Peggy Mays, Patricia Mays, Kathy Dove (LG), Elwanda Mays, Michael Mays (Mellon), Louis Odums, Joe Mays, Patrick Mays (Connie); special friend Kathy Prescott; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
