Alzonia H. Freeman, was born on March 2, 1926, in Lufkin, Texas, to Napoleon and Tisha Hood, whose devotion to family and community would shape the heart of their cherished daughter. Alzonia lived fully and generously through a full century, leaving footprints of kindness, care, and joy in the lives she touched.
Her childhood unfolded in the gentle rhythms of Camden, Texas, where she flourished as a student at Camden School. It was here that she cultivated the enduring values—diligence, compassion, and humility—that would define her long and remarkable life. Guided by an instinctive tenderness and deep sense of responsibility, Alzonia was drawn early to the nurturing profession of nursing. She devotedly served others in times of need, offering solace and healing with a gentle touch and a warm smile. Her work was not simply a vocation but an outpouring of her spirit: she gave to others without reservation, caring for those most vulnerable with the same attentive love she bestowed upon her own family.
While her home was never filled with children of her own, Alzonia became a cherished maternal figure for many. She selflessly took care of others’ children, adopting into her circle all those who needed warmth, encouragement, or a guiding hand. Her home was a haven of laughter and comfort, her doors always open to enduring bonds with nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and the countless souls drawn to her welcoming presence. Alzonia had the gift of never meeting a stranger; every encounter, no matter how fleeting, was met with genuine interest, open-hearted generosity, and a ready smile. The stories of her kindness are woven into the memories of all who knew her; she possessed a remarkable devotion to uplifting others, ensuring everyone she met left feeling seen and valued.
Being with family was Alzonia’s truest joy. Whether gathered for a meal, reminiscing on the porch, or celebrating life’s milestones, she radiated warmth and hospitality. Her presence enlivened every occasion. She was the thread that bound generations and friends together, steadfast in her support and loving in her counsel.
Alzonia was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Napoleon and Tisha Hood; her sisters, Willie B. Hood Moye, Minnie Ola Hood Moye, and Erma Williams; and her brothers, Jerry Lee Hood, Clifford Evans, and Detroit Hood. Their memories, like hers, are cherished by those who remain.
Left to honor her legacy are her host of surviving relatives, including devoted nieces and nephews, her many cousins, dear and lifelong friends, and the broad family of hearts she gathered unto herself over a lifetime of service, kindness, and love.
As we bid farewell to Alzonia H. Freeman, we celebrate a life marked not only by longevity but by its rare and beautiful depth of compassion. She leaves a legacy rich in love—a testament to the profound difference one extraordinary life can make.
